What is Orthodontics?
Orthodontics is a branch of dentistry that can be performed by an orthodontist or a general dentist, which works to correct and realign the teeth. Orthodontics is usually associated with children and teenagers, but now is becoming more widely accepted for adults too, who want to correct their crooked teeth. The process of specific treatments has also greatly improved in the last decade, meaning treatment is a lot more effective and comfortable.

Is there only one form of braces?
There are many forms of braces, all with their own benefits. The main form of braces are fixed braces, which are the most recognisable by the metal wires that run across the teeth. These wires are then tightened to pull the teeth into position and create pressure on the teeth that will eventually align them.

What other forms of braces are there?
Another popular form of braces is Invisalign. Invisalign works differently to fixed braces, by removing any kind of permanent fixtures. Instead, these braces work by using a series of plastic transparent aligners, which gradually adjust the arrangement of your teeth. After an initial 3D scan of your teeth, your dentist will create a projection of your teeth, and what they will look like once the treatment has been completed. Then each aligner, replaced every two weeks, will gradually resemble more the final result. One fantastic benefit of Invisalign is that due to the transparent nature, most people will not be able to tell that you are undergoing treatment.

What are the medical benefits of straight teeth?
Braces will give you straight looking teeth, and many people have commented on the confidence boost that this has given them. Most practices now offer a ‘Smile Makeover’ treatment, which will work to provide a number of treatments in order to work towards a perfect smile. This can involve further treatments such as teeth whitening or veneers. However, the benefits of having straight teeth are not purely cosmetic. Straight teeth are important for good oral health, as crooked teeth can cause all kinds of problems over time. Teeth that have not been properly aligned can cause tooth erosion, which can wear down the enamel, causing pain and a risk of tooth decay. A poor jaw alignment can also cause jaw problems, and cause discomfort. If you are concerned about your crooked teeth, then do not hesitate to contact your dentist, who will be able to advise you on the best course of action.
