How Facial Hair Fights Cancer: Movember and Men’s Health

Have you ever wondered why you start seeing more men with facial hair during the month of November? It’s most likely due to events like No Shave November and Movember, both of which champion the growing of facial hair in order to raise awareness of men’s health issues like testicular cancer, prostate cancer, and suicide prevention. Not all men have equal beard growing powers, but that doesn’t mean they can’t all show their support for the cause. In fact, according to some recent data, most people find plain old stubble to be the most attractive facial hair style! Whether your man is a bearded bigwig or a clean-shaven stud, knowing the facts about men’s health issues is always important.

Prostate Cancer
This year, over 47,000 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in the UK alone. Although it rarely occurs in men under the age of 40, it is still the most commonly diagnosed cancer in the United Kingdom. This is why if you are a male over the age of 40, you should be getting regular prostate exams. They may not be comfortable, but they can save your life. Another more enjoyable way to lower your risk of prostate cancer is frequent ejaculation. A study conducted by Harvard University found that men who experienced a higher amount of ejaculations per month, (from either sexual intercourse or masturbation) were able to lower their risk of prostate cancer by as much as 33%!

Testicular Cancer
Testicular cancer is one of the most common cancers in UK males between 15 and 49 years old. Though it's relatively easy to both identify and treat, testicular cancer cases have been increasing steadily over the past forty years. So it is highly recommended that men be performing self-checks as part of their daily routine. Beyond the actual diagnosis lie the mental and emotional effects of fighting, living with, or even surviving cancer. These effects can include feelings of anxiety and depression, erectile dysfunction, and depending on the treatment regimen; infertility. But the good news is that there are many potential solutions available for each of these. Both in-person and online support groups are easy to locate which can help those in recovery know they are not alone. Erectile dysfunction medications are now widely available, and utilising a sperm bank is always the best option to preserve fertility.

Suicide Prevention
Suicide is a significant global public health issue, with every minute a man dying by suicide. Here in the UK, 75% of suicides are committed by men. Movember is a way to draw attention to men's mental health issues, including schemes such as 'U OK M8' and charities like the Samaritans that can help those at risk, or just going through a tough time.

So as November draws to a close, and you’re noticing all the new fuzzy-faced men in your life, remember to look past the sexy styles and see the support for the fight against these serious issues affecting men. The best way to beat cancer is to arm yourself with knowledge of the facts and be open to these discussions.
